Renewable energy

Renewable energy is generated from sources that are continuously replenished and will therefore not be exhausted in the foreseeable future.

Most renewable sources, like wind, water and biomass, originate from the Sun’s energy. Tides, a result of the gravitational pull of the Moon, represent an exception.

Fossil fuels (coal, oil and natural gas) are not considered renewable. Some formation of these fuels is of course taking place, but the process takes a very log time, millions of years, and they are being consumed considerably faster than they are being created. Nuclear power is not usually seen as renewable either, as it is based on finite resources.

Renewable energy sources are preferable from an environmental standpoint as they are climate neutral, and do not step up the greenhouse effect.

Did you know that the Earth’s winds contain 100 times more energy than the total world energy consumption and that one percent of the energy of the Sun’s rays go into keeping the atmosphere moving?
